Production process

The creation of metadata needs to be taken into consideration from the outset of the project and throughout the development of digital resources to ensure that:

  • metadata creation is included in the project scope
  • the method of capturing the metadata is planned for
  • appropriate resources are available for creating and reviewing the metadata
  • writers and reviewers have a clear understanding of requirements
  • metadata complies with relevant standards and specifications.

Metadata digram: shows the three stages of creating metadata through the lifecycle of a project; Plan, Create and Share

Creation and review

A range of people may contribute to metadata during the life cycle of a project. The fields associated with metadata that require expert knowledge – such as title, description, key learning objectives and educational value – should be created by a subject matter expert, for example, a curator or educator. These fields should be reviewed during the quality assurance process.

Intellectual property specialists should assess all metadata to ensure correct copyright and moral rights information.

Capture and store

Capture and storage mechanisms are affected by two main factors:

  • the distribution system
  • whether the metadata will be manually entered or automatically harvested into the distribution system.

In the planning stage of your project, consult with relevant IT staff to determine the most appropriate distribution system to use and how metadata will be captured and stored.
